5 Explore-Worthy Trails for Families

When Wake was little (even before Dayne was born), we loved to instill the art of exploring within him! We encouraged him to find unique rocks, funny shaped leaves, and what shapes the clouds were making. Eventually we started to find fun paths and trails to keep his exploring nature fulfilled!

Here are five great exploring trails in our north central Kansas area that parents and kids will love alike! In no particular order:

  1. Coronado Heights near Lindsborg, KS: If you haven’t gone to Coronado Heights yet, this is a must to explore with your family! No matter your kids’ age, they will love to explore this old “castle” with picnic areas and various trails winding around the property. It’s set atop a hill where you can see miles away. And your kids will love to climb the castle and to find an even better view on top!

4. Wilson Lake near Wilson, KS: Wilson Lake is sure a treasure to explore! It has a lot of different trails to hike, bike and even horseback ride on, and with all different lengths to choose from! From the most basic hiker (even in a stroller) with a short hike, to a mountain biking master on steep terrain, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

3. Kanopolis State Park near Kanolopolis, KS: From short to long, asphalt to gravel, this gorgeous state park has it all! We saw beaver dams, dragon flies, deer tracks and so many more cool things that we haven't seen anywhere else! And don't forget about Mushroom State Park next door to see some great rock formations!

4. Indian Rock Nature Trail, Salina, KS: This is one of the great trails that really got Wakefield exploring! A hidden gem within the city limits of Salina, this 1.5 dirt and gravel trail winds through trees, rock formations, steep and level terrain. There are areas for fishing, grilling and public bathrooms.

5. BONUS: Rock City in Minneapolis, KS: This natural attraction has a little trail, but it’s more known for exploring and climbing on giant concretion rocks! This is a 5-acre park with over 200 giant Dakota concretions. They can be up to 27 feet in diameter! If you haven’t been, this is an area right outside of Minneapolis that can be explored for a whole day! There is even a little gift shop there with snacks, memorabilia and bathrooms.

So there you have it! If you have a little explorer like we do, please visit these great trails to keep exploring with your families!

What did we miss? What is your favorite trail and exploring place?
